CME Group launches Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures
CME Group, the world’s leading derivatives marketplace, has officially launched futures contracts for Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Uniswap (UNI). These new products went live on October 19, 2026, significantly expanding the range of regulated cryptocurrency derivatives available to institutional investors.
First announced on September 22, 2026, pending regulatory review, the launch brings CME’s total number of single-asset crypto contracts to eleven. This move directly addresses growing client demand for sophisticated, regulated tools to manage risk and gain exposure to a wider array of digital assets beyond just Bitcoin and Ether.
CME Group’s Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures deepen institutional access
The introduction of these cash-settled futures provides a crucial bridge between traditional finance and the burgeoning altcoin market. Trading on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) regulated CME Globex platform allows institutions to gain price exposure to BCH and UNI without the complexities of direct token custody, such as managing digital wallets and private keys.
These products are designed for capital efficiency and versatility. “As crypto markets continue to mature, participants require broader, regulated tools to navigate evolving digital asset related price risk,” stated Giovanni Vicioso, Global Head of Cryptocurrency Products at CME Group.
He emphasized that the new BCH and UNI contracts enable clients to “manage price risk and gain exposure to key crypto networks within our 24/7, regulated marketplace.” For many institutional players, the availability of such tools is a prerequisite for market entry, a factor that could see bitcoin primed for gains under various conditions.
The contracts are financially settled in U.S. dollars, based on a reference rate calculated daily by CF Benchmarks. For Bitcoin Cash, the standard contract (ticker: BCA) is sized at 250 BCH. A micro version (MCH) is available at 25 BCH.
At current prices (around $272.06 per BCH), a standard BCH contract represents a notional value of approximately $68,000. Uniswap’s standard contract (ticker: UNI) is for 10,000 UNI. Its micro counterpart (MUN) is for 1,000 UNI, carrying a notional value of around $69,600 at current prices (around $6.96 per UNI).
The significance of a DeFi token listing
While Bitcoin Cash is a well-established fork of Bitcoin, the inclusion of Uniswap (UNI) is particularly noteworthy. As the native token of one of the largest decentralized exchanges, UNI’s debut on a premier regulated marketplace represents a major validation for the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector.
This move signals that institutional-grade infrastructure is expanding beyond foundational assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum into more complex protocols. It has direct implications for a potential spot Uniswap exchange-traded fund (ETF).
Asset manager Bitwise has a pending application for a spot UNI ETF. A key, albeit informal, prerequisite for regulatory approval has often been a healthy and regulated futures market. The launch on CME starts a six-month period that could bolster the case for such a product in 2027.
Market reaction and context for new contracts
The market’s reaction to these new listings has unfolded in two distinct phases. Following the initial announcement on September 22, Bitcoin Cash saw its price surge by approximately 25-30%.
Open interest in BCH derivatives nearly doubled to around $295 million after the news. This initial enthusiasm suggested strong pent-up demand for a regulated Bitcoin Cash product. However, by October 18, the day before launch, open interest had receded to pre-announcement levels, indicating that traders had positioned themselves in advance.
Uniswap’s price reaction was more subdued from the start, experiencing a minor 3.9 percentage point dip in the 36 hours leading up to the launch. This decline was likely attributable to broader market pullbacks and some profit-taking after its strong rally from $3.15 in June to $10.90 in September.
These two products are part of an aggressive expansion of CME’s crypto offerings throughout 2026. Earlier in the year, the exchange added futures for Cardano, Chainlink, Stellar, Avalanche, and Sui. These new additions have already generated over $1 billion in total notional value year-to-date, demonstrating clear institutional appetite for a diverse range of altcoin derivatives.
Such expansions are crucial as the market anticipates significant bitcoin price movements.
Industry leaders welcome expanded regulated derivatives
The move has garnered positive feedback from across the financial industry, with leaders viewing it as another step in the maturation of digital asset markets. Justin Young, CEO and Co-Founder of Volatility Shares, highlighted the importance of choice and regulatory oversight.
“It gives market participants more ways to access these assets within a regulated futures framework, while providing additional tools to manage risk and express market views,” Young commented. Noel Kimmel, President at Ripple Prime, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for robust infrastructure. Kimmel stated that “Institutions managing cryptocurrency exposure need around-the-clock access to regulated derivatives, underpinned by the clearing and financing infrastructure to match.”
The expansion of CME’s crypto offerings, which includes XRP, helps build out the capital-efficient toolkit institutions require. To cater specifically to large-scale traders, all the new contracts are block-eligible and support Basis Trade at Index Close (BTIC).
Block trading allows institutions to negotiate large deals privately off the public order book, minimizing market impact. BTIC functionality lets them execute a futures trade at a price fixed against the day’s closing index level. This is a common practice in traditional commodity and equity markets.
Broader implications for altcoin market maturity
The steady introduction of new altcoin futures by an institution of CME Group’s stature is more than just a product line expansion. It serves as a powerful indicator of the crypto market’s evolving maturity. By providing these regulated instruments, CME is effectively building the foundational plumbing necessary for more conservative capital to enter the space.
These are not merely speculative tools but essential components for sophisticated hedging and portfolio management strategies. This continued integration of digital assets into mainstream financial frameworks creates a virtuous cycle. The availability of regulated derivatives reduces perceived risk, which attracts more institutional capital, even as some bitcoin holders adjust their strategies.
That increased liquidity and participation, in turn, makes the underlying asset class more stable and attractive. This justifies the creation of even more advanced financial products like options and ETFs. As CME Group continues to lead the way, it places competitive pressure on other global exchanges to follow suit.
The result is likely to be a further broadening of regulated on-ramps for a diverse range of cryptocurrencies, accelerating the convergence of digital assets and traditional finance for years to come.
