Usyk vs Dubois Undercard Update
- Oleksandr Usyk Will Defend His Unified Heavyweight Titles Against Daniel Dubois
- Usyk-Dubois Will Take Place On August 26 In Poland, Live On TNT Sports Box Office
- Several Additions Have Been Made To The PPV Portion Of The Usyk vs Dubois Undercard
In May, Alek Krassyuk (K2 Promotions) won the promotional rights to the WBA mandatory title defence between his fighter Oleksandr Usyk and Queensberry Promotions’ charge Daniel Dubois.
Krassyuk successfully outbid the English company headed by Frank Warren with an offer of $8,057,000 which was around $2,400,000 higher than the $5,620,050 bid offered by Dubois’ promoter.
Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs), the WBA, IBF, and WBO Heavyweight champion, will officially receive 75% of the purse ($6,042,750) whilst the WBA’s secondary champion Dubois (19-1, 18 KOs) is entitled to 25% ($2,014,250).
After winning Olympic gold, the Ukrainian unified the cruiserweight division through the world boxing super series, winning the undisputed title in 2018.
He then signed a 3-fight deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing that saw him gain notoriety in the UK and the US, headlining on DAZN stateside and two UK PPVs on Sky Sports Box Office against Tony Bellew and Derek Chisora respectively.
Usyk finally got his chance at Heavyweight gold in Sep 2021 and took it with both hands, convincingly upsetting Anthony Joshua and capturing three belts with a wide points win. Saudi Arabia staged the Usyk-Joshua rematch eleven months later and it was the same result.
Usyk now makes his first defence against Britain’s Dubois, a win here will likely set up another mandatory defence against Croatian Fillip Hrgovic, who returns to action two weeks earlier.
Despite being the younger and more powerful puncher, 25-year-old Dubois has a significant hurdle ahead, as many feel that this match against Usyk may be a step too far at this stage.
Nevertheless, he’ll be heading into the fight under the guidance of his new trainer, Don Charles, following a surprising split from Shane McGuigan, something that NoSmokeSport broke the news of previously.
