Tank Davis Next Fight – Stephen Espinoza Reveals Options

Chris Colbert Rumours

Rumours have surfaced of the possibility of Davis facing 26-year-old former WBA Interim Super Featherweight champion Chris Colbert (17-1, 6 KOs) next.

“I think it’s a little bit premature. Colbert’s a 130, maybe 135”, Espinoza told Fight Hype, “Nothing’s been determined”

Espinoza made it clear that they were a long way away from finalizing a fight and as it stood, every possibility was on the table for one of boxing’s biggest stars.

“Tank is just out, just starting to get back into the gym. Everything’s open, all fights are available.”

Isaac Cruz Rematch

One option that Espinoza was particularly enthusiastic about was Mexixo’s Isaac Cruz. Cruz stepped in at 4 weeks’ notice to replace Rolly Romero and face Tank in Dec 2021 losing a 7-5 decision on two cards.

“I think it’s an option”, Espinoza said of the Isaac Cruz rematch, “I think it’s an interesting one”.

Although some fans are not necessarily desperate to see a second fighter between the pair, Espinoza believes there will be significant interest.

“Neither one of those guys was completely satisfied with how the first fight went. Isaac believes he had a missed opportunity, Tank was hampered by the hand. I’d love to see that fight again.”

Davis vs Cruz 2, however, would only be a possibility if Cruz beats Giovanni Cabrera in their WBA/WBC Lightweight title eliminator on Saturday’s Spence-Crawford PPV undercard.

Unrealistic Devin Haney Fight

“There were some preliminary discussions”, Espinoza revealed about a potential Davis-Haney fight, “I’m not aware that any numbers have been exchanged.”

“Haney’s in the middle of a lot of things, he’s got a lot of opportunities, and Tank’s just getting out.”

Espinoza was under the impression that Haney would pursue a Regis Prograis bout and that Tank-Haney wasn’t realistic at the present time especially with Davis just being released from jail.

“I’m not sure, from my perspective, it’s a realistic opportunity to talk about Tank when you’ve got two mandatory/title challenge opportunities waiting for you. Tank is probably his best at 135 and will probably stay there.”
