Oba Femi Made History By Winning The NXT North American Championship
Oba Femi won the NXT North American Championship on January 9, and he made history while doing so.
Oba Femi Makes History
Oba Femi was born May 21, 2001 as Isaac Odugbesan in Lagos, Nigeria. He was a track and field athlete who became a part of the WWE’s NIL program in 2021 and 2022 before officially being signed by the promotion in August 2022.
Femi had three matches in the NXT Men’s Breakout Tournament, successfully winning each en route to becoming the tournament victor. With the victory, Femi was on the fast track to challenging for an NXT Championship of his choosing at the time he wished.
He chose to challenge Dragon Lee for the NXT North American Championship on the January 9 edition of NXT and was successful in doing so. The win not only saw Femi claim gold but also put him into the history books.
Femi became the first Nigerian-born wrestler to win an NXT Championship and, at just 22 years old, he also became the youngest champion in the NXT North American title’s history. In addition to that, Femi became the first NIL program graduate to win a championship in the entire promotion.
Femi becomes the 22nd champion in the title’s history and this marks his first wrestling championship. Several former NXT North American Champions have gone on to greater heights and it can be expected that the same will happen for Femi.
