Carmelo Hayes In US Title Tournament
US Champion, Logan Paul, revealed on the December 1 edition of SmackDown that a tournament would determine the next number one contender for the title. Although seven of the eight positions were revealed, one remained undetermined but it was confirmed that it would be an NXT superstar.
On December 10, NXT General Manager Shawn Michaels took to his social media to confirm who the superstar going on the SmackDown excursion would be. Carmelo Hayes has been revealed as the entrant representing NXT in the US Championship Contender’s tournament.
Hayes was the 2021 NXT Breakout Tournament winner before going on to win the Cruiserweight Championship, North American Championship, as well as the NXT Championship. With the North American Championship, Hayes has the longest accumulative reign spread across his two runs with the title.
Hayes has already made his main roster debut, appearing on the June 26 edition of Raw. On the December 15 edition of SmackDown, he returns to the main roster, this time partaking in the tournament for a shot at the US Championship.
Hayes will be going up against Grayson Waller, with the chance to advance and go on to face Austin Theory or Kevin Owens.
