Aspinall: UFC Had The Impression Jones, Stipe Would Retire
Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic were set to headline UFC 295 on November 11th at Madison Square Garden. But, Jon Jones got injured and now the fight is completely off. Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich are now set to take its place for the interim Heavyweight Title.
UFC Thought Jones And Stipe May Retire
Sergei Pavlovich was set to be the backup fighter if anything happened to the UFC 295 main event. But, when Jon Jones pulled out, Stipe Miocic wasn’t willing to fight Sergei. Many wondered why Tom Aspinall vs. Sergei Pavlovich wasn’t just on the card anyway as a contenders fight. Tom cleared up the questioning while on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.
“The original plan was, kind of, obviously them two guys are going to fight, Sergei’s going to be the backup. And the, I think they were kind of under the impression that both guys are going to retire afterwards. And they were going to kind of see how that played out a little bit and if that didn’t happen, sorry, if they were both going to retire, then I was going to fight Pavlovich for the vacant title anyway like early next year, anyway. I think they were just going to kind of see what happened after this card anyway, so, yeah, it was just a big waiting game for me. But, luckily, I stayed in the gym a little bit, I’m a professional athlete, I take it very seriously so I’m always in the gym anyway, but like I said, my intensity hasn’t been there as if I was training for a fight but, I’m not too far away.”
There is questions if maybe Jones wouldn’t even come back from this current injury, but, maybe Jon Jones will have one more fight before stepping into the sun set. Now, Maybe Stipe is in that boat, too.
UFC 295 goes down on November 11th in New York City at Madison Square Garden. The event will be headlined by Jiri Prochazka vs. Alex Pereira for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Title, with the interim Heavyweight Championship bout in the co-main event slot.
