UFC 294: Charles Oliveira Out, Volkanovski Vs. Makhachev Set
Charles Oliveira was set to challenge Islam Makhachev for the UFC Lightweight Championship on October 21st at UFC 294 in Etihad Arena is Abu Dhabi. Now, that fight is no more.
UFC 294 Has A New Main Event
It was first reported by OverDogs Podcast that Charles Oliveira has been pulled from his upcoming championship fight at UFC 294. Dana White revealed that Charles was badly cut over his eye in sparring last night and needed stitches, thus not being able to fight. But, the main event isn’t completely scrapped as UFC is looking to have UFC Featherweight Champion, Alexander Volkanovski, come up and challenge Islam for the Lightweight title.
Volkanovski and Makhachev did meet back in February at UFC 284 in Australia. The fight was very close and went to Islam in a decision win, despite many believing that Volkanovski had a case to win the fight. Following the fight, Volkanovski told Islam that he’d like a rematch, but to be fair, they’d fight in Abu Dhabi on Makhachev’s turf. Now, it seems like all the stars have aligned for that, even if it was sadly at the cost of an Oliveira pullout.
Dana White has officially confirmed this news.
