Cain Velasquez Makes UFC Return This Saturday As Cornerman

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez will return to the promotion this weekend at UFC’s first event of 2024. UFC Fight Night: Ankalaev vs. Walker goes down from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada this Saturday, with the main card starting at 7PM ET. Cain will be apart of the show, but not as a fighter, as he will be a cornerman for Gabriel Benitez.

Cain Velasquez Returns To UFC

Gabriel Benitez will be taking on the veteran Jim Miller on the main card of this weekend’s event and what a better cornerman to have than a former world champion. Cain Velasquez finally is getting back into the fight game in some capacity after being in some legal troubles throughout the past few years. Velasquez is currently out on bail after being charged with attempted murder. Cain was initially arrested on February 28, 2022, after he allegedly engaged in a high-speed chase while firing several rounds from a handgun aimed at a car with Harry Goularte inside. Goularte faces separate charges for allegedly sexually molesting Velasquez’ son at a daycare owned by Goularte’s mother. Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, was hit by a bullet during the altercation and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Velasquez was granted bail back in November 2022 after spending eight months in jail. While awaiting trial on attempted murder charges, Cain was granted permission by the courts to travel for work, including appearances at professional wrestling events for Lucha Libre promotion AAA, as well as coaching fighters like Usman Nurmagomedov in Bellator and now Benitez in UFC. After several pushbacks, a new trial setting date now scheduled for February 14th. If convicted, Cain Velasquez could face up to life in prison. But, he will corner Gabriel Benitez this weekend first.
