Jagex Announces RuneScape 4, Unreal Engine Powers New MMO
Jagex has officially unveiled “RuneScape 4,” a new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) currently in early development. This significant RuneScape 4 announcement came during RuneFest 2026 on October 3, held in Birmingham, England. The upcoming title is set to be the first in the long-running franchise to be built using Unreal Engine.
The revelation marks a bold new direction for the developer, expanding its beloved fantasy universe of Gielinor. Jagex confirmed the game will target “a new generation of players.” While details remain scarce, the move signals a substantial investment in the future of the RuneScape IP.
Jagex announces RuneScape unreal engine update
The annual RuneFest celebration served as the backdrop for Jagex’s ambitious reveal. Executive producer Jesse America, known for his work on RuneScape: Dragonwilds, provided insights into the project’s origins. He explained that “RuneScape 4” evolved from what was initially conceived as an expansion.
This planned expansion for Dragonwilds, originally titled Shadows of Ashenfall, was set to enhance the survival game. However, player feedback pushed for more traditional MMORPG mechanics. Players specifically requested persistent servers, higher player counts, and robust player-to-player trading.
From Expansion to Standalone MMORPG
The development team embraced these community requests with considerable creative ambition. America noted that early prototypes and design documents indicated a much broader scope. This led to the realization that the project had outgrown its original expansion designation, evolving into a full-fledged MMORPG.
“We came to the realization that it essentially would be an MMO, and that it deserved its own game,” America stated during a pre-RuneFest briefing. This decision pivoted the project into its current form, aiming to deliver a distinct and expansive experience for fans.
Powering a New Generation: Unreal Engine and Gielinor’s Future
A key aspect of “RuneScape 4” is its foundation on Unreal Engine. This choice represents a significant technological leap for the franchise, which has historically utilized proprietary engines. The exact version of Unreal Engine, whether 5 or the upcoming 6, remains unconfirmed by Jagex.
The new MMORPG will be set in the familiar world of Gielinor, with its narrative beginning in Ashenfall. This landmass, located north-east of Gielinor, was first explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The story will unfold years after the climactic destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, aiming to build upon existing lore.
Early Development and Long-Term Vision
Jagex emphasized that “RuneScape 4” is currently in its very early stages of development. Consequently, a release is not expected for at least a few years. The significant increase in scope, from an expansion targeting 2027 to an entirely new game, has naturally extended its timeline.
The studio also showcased a brief teaser trailer, hinting at the game’s aesthetic. It featured a blend of art styles reminiscent of both RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape. The trailer depicted a medieval town, an adventurer riding a dragon, and a dramatic three-headed dragon attack, suggesting a focus on draconic themes.
Expanding the RuneScape Universe, Not Replacing It
Crucially, Jagex sought to reassure its existing player base about the future of its other titles. The company stressed that “RuneScape 4” is not intended to replace RuneScape (also known as RuneScape 3), Old School RuneScape, or RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Each game will continue to receive dedicated investment and support.
Jesse America described “RuneScape 4” as the studio’s “fourth pillar,” indicating a strategy of expanding the overall RuneScape universe. This approach aims to cater to diverse player preferences across its portfolio. Despite these assurances, some players have voiced concerns that the new title might eventually draw significant numbers away from RuneScape 3.
Jagex intends to build upon the community co-development model that has proven successful with its flagship titles. This philosophy aims to involve players in the development process of “RuneScape 4.” Such a collaborative approach echoes the successful evolution seen in both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape over the years.
A Packed RuneFest 2026: Other Major Reveals
Beyond the headline “RuneScape 4” announcement, RuneFest 2026 delivered a plethora of news for fans across the franchise. Jagex outlined significant updates and plans for its established games, reinforcing its commitment to the entire RuneScape ecosystem.
These announcements underscore Jagex’s strategy to invigorate its existing player communities. From major reworks to new content drops, the studio is clearly investing in retaining and attracting players across its varied offerings. This multi-pronged approach demonstrates a long-term vision for the IP.
RuneScape Reignited and OSRS Updates
A significant reveal was RuneScape Reignited, set to launch on Tuesday, December 2, 2026. This initiative aims to rejuvenate the 25-year-old game, offering a remastered journey. It features a fresh economy, new high scores, and a “player-first” focus, allowing players to start a new character in a remastered 2001-era Gielinor.
Non-members will gain full access to RuneScape Reignited from December 2 to December 12, 2026, offering a generous trial period. The 2027 roadmap for RuneScape includes three story arcs: Hoard of Dragons, City of Gnomes, and Secrets of Karamja. Additionally, an agility rework, new bosses, areas, and a new Grandmaster Quest are planned.
For Old School RuneScape, the Fractured Archive raid will launch in just a few weeks, on October 20, 2026. Menaphos is slated to open in 2027, introducing Fool’s Gold, OSRS’s first Skilling Dungeon, and the Soul Altar. Hardcore Worlds, offering a high-stakes, faction-based mode, will arrive on November 4, 2026.
Animated Adaptation and Dragonwilds Saga
Further diversifying the brand, Jagex announced a partnership with YouTuber Charlie White (MoistCr1TiKaL) and Lyrical Media for an animated RuneScape adaptation. This project aims to introduce Gielinor’s rich lore and characters to new audiences through a different medium. Details on the platform and release window are still pending.
Meanwhile, RuneScape: Dragonwilds will receive a new Blood Crystal saga. This update continues the narrative thread for the recently console-ported title. These varied announcements indicate a holistic approach to expanding the RuneScape brand across multiple platforms and formats.
The Road Ahead for Gielinor’s Saga
The official announcement of “RuneScape 4” marks a pivotal moment for Jagex and its long-standing franchise. While its release is still years away, the use of Unreal Engine signifies a modern technological foundation. This move positions the game to attract new players accustomed to contemporary visuals and gameplay standards.
Jagex’s careful articulation of its “fourth pillar” strategy aims to mitigate concerns among loyal players of existing titles. The studio seeks to expand, rather than fragment, its player base. Community involvement, a hallmark of RuneScape’s success, will be crucial as “RuneScape 4” takes shape in the coming years.
