Tokyo 2020 Olympic Champion Galal Yafai (4-0, 3 KOs) defends his WBC International Flyweight Title against Sheffield’s former British champion, Tommy Frank (15-3-1, 3 KOs) this Saturday, August 19, live on DAZN.
Yafai-Frank takes place at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, England and is the latest headliner in Matchroom Boxing’s ‘NXT GEN’ series.
‘Golden Galal’ turned professional in January 2022 and won the WBC International title over ten rounds in his debut at London’s O2. Since then, Yafai has boxed at Madison Square Garden, Abu Dhabi and back at the O2 and now tops the bill for the first time.
Yafai will be targeting British, Commonwealth and European titles which could all fall in the hands of the winner of a potential Jay Harris-Connor Butler matchup.
Frank lost his British Flyweight Title to Harris just a few months ago and has picked up another big opportunity off the back of a defeat.
‘Super’ Tommy is the vastly more experienced fighter in the pro ranks and has previously held Central Area, Commonwealth, British, WBC International Silver and IBO Intercontinental titles.
Yafai vs Frank Undercard
Yafai vs Frank Undercard: Main Card
Bolton Super-Lightweight Khaleel Majid (10-0, 3 KOs) makes his Matchroom debut against Italy’s Alessandro Fersula (9-4) over eight rounds.
Majid, who is advised by Sam Jones, inked with Hearn in April as he looks to move onto the next stage of his career, into big title fights.
The 26-year-old nicknamed ‘Major’ is a big ticket seller in the North West – which will be an important market for Matchroom moving forward – and claims to sell over 600 tickets out of his hands.
Alnwick’s rising Welterweight star Cyrus Pattinson (6-0, 4 KOs) broke down and stopped former British Champion Chris Jenkins last time out in March in his first headline fight at the Utilita Arena Newcastle to pick up the WBA International Title.
The 29-year-old former Team GB standout puts his Title on the line against Wolverhampton’s former Midlands Area Welterweight Champion Conah Walker (11-2-1, 3 KOs) as he continues to climb the 147lbs ladder towards further title shots later this year.
English Heavyweight champion Solomon Dacres (6-0, 2 KOs) will face 28-year-old South African southpaw Chris Thompson (12-4-1, 7 KOs).
S-Jam managed Dacres to claim the English championship with a second-round stoppage over Robert Ismay and will hope to land a shot at the prestigious Lonsdale belt next year.
South African Thompson is coming off a points loss to 18-0 Russian hope Evgeny Romanov, who famously knocked out Deontay Wilder in the unpaid ranks back in 2008.
An approach was made to BOXXER-promoted Jeamie TKV for an English title fight on this card but the undefeated Heavyweight declined it due to insufficient preparation time, asking for a September bout instead.
Oxford’s Jordan Flynn (9-0, 1 KOs) and Birmingham’s Kane Baker (19-10-1, 3 KOs) rematch in an eliminator for the English Super-Featherweight Title following their April clash.
