Tommy Frank vs Jay Harris Fight Set For May 13 In Sheffield
Tommy Frank vs Jay Harris Lands In Sheffield For British Flyweight Title
Sheffield’s Tommy Frank (15-2-1, 3 KOs) will defend his British Flyweight title against mandatory challenger Swansea’s Jay Harris (19-3, 10 KOs) on Saturday, May 13 in Malta at the Platinum Suite SUFC, Bramall Lane, Sheffield live on Fightzone.
Frank-Harris was ordered for the vacant European title after the previous champion Jairo Noriega vacated the championship but the belt has not been announced.
Frank vs Harris was supposed to take place in December last year on a Matchroom card but with that falling through, the fight was scheduled to headline at York Hall on March 10. That was also postponed for unspecified reasons and now the fight lands in Sheffield after the pair have been waiting over six months to face each other.
Frank won the British title with a convincing points decision over Matt Windle in late 2021 after suffering back-to-back upset defeats to Mexico’s Rosendo Hugo Guarneros. Frank’s sole defence came against Craig Derbyshire earlier this year when they battled to a controversial draw in Rotherham with most having Derbyshire winning the fight.
Harris has competed at a much higher level, challenging for Julio Cesar Martinez‘s world title in 2020 as well as holding the European strap prior. However, consecutive stoppage losses to Ricardo Sandoval and Hector Flores have seen his career trajectory plummet and Harris now finds himself in a ‘must-win’ fight at domestic level.
Eddie Hearn has previously confirmed interest in matching Olympic champion Galal Yafai with the winner of Frank vs Harris. An all-British clash at the lower weights with two recognised names is a rare occurrence and Yafai/Hearn are unlikely to pass on the opportunity to challenge for the Lonsdale Belt in a marketable fight.
