– Katie Taylor vs Chantelle Cameron Marks The First-Ever Battle Of Reigning Undisputed Champions In The 4-Belt Era

– Cameron Looks To Revenge Amateur Defeat In Dream Matchup
FRIDAY, JUNE 3 2011 – Katowice, Poland, Team GB and Ireland faced off in the semi-finals of the Lightweight division at the European Union Amateur Boxing Championships. The reigning AIBA world and European champion Katie Taylor convincingly beat English champion Chantelle Cameron 28-10.
Taylor went on to win Gold at the 2012 Olympics amongst seventeen other international amateur tournaments whilst Cameron didn’t quite reach the same pinnacles of the unpaid code. Nevertheless, more than five years later, they both switched over to the pro ranks within seven months of each other.
Ever since they turned professional, the pair have always been linked with fighting each other but the Irishwoman’s rise was much quicker than the Northamptonian’s and they found themselves at different weights, at different stages of their career and different positions on fight cards.
With them both being under the same promoter, Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, fight fans knew that one day they would be treated to this matchup.
Taylor’s homecoming has been years in the making and after a fight-of-the-year contender in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden, the Amanda Serrano rematch became the perfect fight to do it.
Boxing being boxing though and complications began before the rematch was even announced. Croke Park fell out of the running due to extraordinarily high costs and they would have to go to an arena instead.
The dream venue was out and soon after so was the perfect opponent. Serrano would not be ready for May 20. Promoter Eddie Hearn told media outlets that the focus was on a Serrano rematch and the homecoming may well be scrapped.
Taylor was not gonna wait any longer though and she made an unexpected move by calling out Cameron over social media to save the May 20 date. “Let’s get it done @EddieHearn, this homecoming has waited long enough! @3arenadublin is available so let’s go give Ireland a night to remember on May 20. Let’s go @chancam91, happy to move up in weight for the opportunity to become a two-weight undisputed champ”
Not only was she willing to face the fighter that most felt would give the Bray women her toughest night, but Taylor was willing to move up in weight and dance at 140.
1️2 years unbeaten and 8 world titles between them, Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) and long-time rival Cameron (17-0, 8 KOs) collide this Saturday, May 20 for Cameron’s Undisputed Super Lightweight title at the 3Arena, Dublin, live and exclusively on DAZN
Taylor’s performance that night in 2011 was one of the best of her amateur career and more than a decade on, she will need another career-best display to keep her undefeated record intact.
