AJ vs Fury in October

AJ vs Fury in October? Winner to fight Usyk

In a recent interview uploaded to Matchroom’s own YouTube channel, it was revealed by Eddie Hearn that as a result of injuries sustained in Saturday’s fight for the undisputed titles, it’s possible that we see AJ vs Fury in October, with the current planned date being either on the 12th or 13th, before the winner goes on to fight Usyk in a bid to avenge their loss to the Ukrainian.

Saturday night saw Oleksandr Usyk move to 22-0, with a split decision win over Tyson Fury, now 34-1-1, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The gruelling contest saw Fury controlling a few rounds in the first half of the fight, before Usyk took over and even came dangerously close to stopping the Brit in the ninth round.

There have been indications that Fury will seek to activate his rematch clause immediately, with the Morecambe man himself suggesting ‘We’ll get it back on in October’ in his post-fight interview in the ring, and Usyk’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk stating ‘We are men of our words. It’s not about paperwork – if we shake hands and promise something, we do it. I see no reason for the rematch not to take place.’

AJ vs Fury in October?

When asked about the rematch clause between Fury and Usyk, Eddie Hearn commented that the October date proposed by Turki Al-Sheikh would only give the pair five weeks of rest before plunging them back into camp for their rematch.

Despite rumours of Usyk’s jaw being broken being untrue, with Eddie commenting, ‘Tyson Fury said Usyk broke his jaw, I don’t think that’s true but it was a high maintenance fight’, there is still the chance that the rematch is delayed and the next big heavyweight clash will be AJ vs Fury in October.

Later in the interview Eddie states, ‘Who knows, you know if Usyk is injured and can’t make the date do you make Fury against Joshua with the winner fighting Usyk? I mean the answer for me is ‘yes please!”

A clash between the two Brits has been a long time coming, with the two engaging in back and forths for years now, with the fight set to happen on more than one occasion before falling through. After having both been handed defeats by Oleksandr Usyk, the men could now be fighting for the spot of number two in the world.

It remains to be seen whether Fury will activate the rematch clause, and whether Usyk will be ready for October, but it is clear that Hearn will be pushing for AJ’s next big crack at the belts.
