Sunny Edwards Signing Is A Real Coup For Eddie Hearn

As first reported in the Daily Star, Sunny Edwards has signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. What a coup that is!

Sunny is one of Britain’s only world champions (alongside Tyson Fury, Lawrence Okolie, and Josh Taylor.) He is also a formidable force in the flyweight division, reigning as IBF world champion.

Sunny Edwards Signs With Eddie Hearn

His style is normally more one for boxing purists, as a master in the art of hitting and don’t get hit. However, he eschewed his usual deployment of elusive lateral movement in his last fight with Felix Alvarado and opted to exhibit his acumen as an offensive fighter, content to trade at close quarters. In doing so, he has proven that he can attract a wide demographic of DAZN subscribers because he has added a greater degree of versatility to his craft.

Contrary to what you may expect, I must confess to being a massive fan of Sunny Edward’s usual slippery showcases of boxing flair and finesse. But he is often tainted with a brush that fans want to see wars and knockouts. The Alvarado display showed he had that in his locker as well.

In terms of matchmaking Sunny Edwards, there is obviously a view to finally getting the Julio Cesar Martinez unification fight over the line. A tantalizing prospect for British fight fans, which also carries an instant selling point to a casual market, based on Martinez badly hurting Sunny’s brother, Charlie in a no-contest for the flyweight crown in 2019.

However, there is an abundance of riches for Eddie Hearn when it comes to making big fights for Sunny Edwards. ‘Bam’ Rodriguez is another one that has already reached the trash-talking phase, Galal Yafai is waiting in the wings when his development is finalized, Juan Francisco Estrada is an option if Sunny moves up to super-fly, while Prince Patel will always be game for an acrimonious build-up.

Sunny Edwards is also a natural talker and personality. He has created an engaged base of followers on Twitter, who will constantly be drawn into his fights and that comes on top of the casual viewer who will be drawn in by BBC Sport coverage heralding Sunny as one of the UK’s premier boxers.

So, Eddie has all the makings for a great partnership, even if it is a match-up I didn’t think we’d ever see!
