In an unexpected turn of events, undefeated champion Claressa Shields will defend her undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF & WBO middleweight world titles against Marciela Cornejo this Saturday, June 3, live on DAZN. This follows a doping violation by initial contender Hanna Gabriels, who is the only fighter to drop Shields.
The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), as part of the WBC’s Clean Boxing Programme, detected the substance during a routine test, leading to Gabriels’ immediate withdrawal from the high-stakes bout. Gabriels and her promoter Lou DiBella claim that the violation was a result of a steroidal cream applied to her dog.
Former WBC super middleweight champion Cornejo will now challenge Shields in her homecoming. The American has unsuccessfully fought for titles on three separate occasions which involve decision losses to Kali Reis and Franchon Crews-Dezurn.
Shields convincingly settled her decade-long rivalry with Savannah Marshall in Oct last year at a packed O2 Arena, via a convincing unanimous decision. She now gets the opportunity to headline in her home state in the US with a major broadcaster in DAZN supporting her.
Marshall will face Crews-Dezurn for the undisputed super middleweight titles in July, and with the limited pool of talent around 160 in women’s boxing, a rematch between Shields and Marshall is almost inevitable.
