Conor McGregor took to Twitter on Friday night, in an attempt to keep Taylor’s dream of fighting Irelands famous stadium alive, after Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn had said he was forced to look for alternative venues!
Katie Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) has dreamed of fighting in front of her home faithful at the famous Croke Park in a much anticipated rematch with Amanda Serrano (44-2-1, 30 KOs), but it had seemed over the past week that those plans may have been put on ice! In an interview with Ariel Helwani, whilst in New York promoting Serrano’s fight with Eddie Hearn claimed that the rental costs for staging the fight were close to three times of what Wembley Stadium would charge!
McGregor said on twitter “The extra security bill is 500k to have Katie Taylor fight at Croke Park? I will sponsor the event to see this happen.” Hearn then replied to McGregor: “Let’s talk”.
The much anticipated rematch has been highly speculated since the 2 squared off in April of last year at Maddison Square Gardens in what many deemed the fight of the year! Last night in the same venue, following Serrano’s Unanimous decision win over Erika Cruz, the rematch was confirmed to be taking place on May 20th in Dublin.
In an interview with iFLTV, following the Puerto Rican’s Undisputed World featherweight win, Hearn said he had held brief discussions with McGregor. He even alluded to a trilogy of fights between the two with the May clash at the 3arena before a third bout at Croke Park in September.
Serrano will be looking to exact revenge following a close points loss to Taylor in New York but Katie Taylor will no doubt be roared on in her homecoming bout.
