McCaskill vs Habazin Lands Slot On NYC Card As Hearn Plots Transatlantic Unification

NEW YORK will be the next destination in Jessica McCaskill‘s journey as she looks to become undisputed for a second time.

NoSmokeSport.com has confirmed that the American McCaskill (12-3, 5KOs) will defend her WBA, WBC and IBO Welterweight titles against her mandatory challenger, Croatia’s Ivana Habazin (21-4, 7KOs) on June 24.

McCaskill-Habazin will serve as an undercard bout to Edgar Berlanga’s Matchroom debut against Irishman Jason Quigley at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, live worldwide on DAZN.

Piranha Promotions originally won the purse bids for the fight at $201,000 outbidding Matchroom’s offer of $91,000. The unheralded promoter, however, forfeited the rights and they fell to the next highest bidder, Matchroom Boxing, as a result. This development, like many others, was first reported by NoSmokeSport.

10% of the purse will be reserved for the winner (as is standard in WBC world title purse bids), McCaskill will get 70% of the remaining 90% ($57,330) whilst Habaazin, the WBC mandatory challenger, is due 30% ($24,570).

Should McCaskill overcome Habazin, her next fight will likely be a transatlantic unification bout with WBO champion Sandy Ryan, who decisioned Canada’s Marie Pier Houle last Saturday to win the vacant belt.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has declared that a 3-belt unification fight between Ryan and McCaskill is already signed but NoSmokeSport has confirmed with McCaskill’s coach/manager, Rick Ramos, that the McCaskill-Ryan bout is NOT signed yet but is likely to happen.

Habazin owned the IBF welterweight title for six months in 2014 and now looks to become a two-time champion almost a decade on. The Croatian lost to Claressa Shields in her last high-profile bout in 2020 on Showtime.

McCaskill returns to action for the first time since her convincing loss at the hands of Chantelle Cameron in Abu Dhabi last November. The American upset long-reigning undisputed champion Cecilia Breakhus in 2020 and repeated the win seven months later.

Also on the card, Reshat Mati will compete in an all-New York clash with Brooklyn’s Wesley Ferrer and popular Polish Heavyweight Adam Kownacki returns to action against American veteran Joe Cusumano.
