Luis Nery Outlasts Azat Hovhannisyan In Brutal 11-Round War

Luis Nery Moves Sets Up Shot At Inoue-Fulton Winner With ‘Crazy A’ TKO

The Fox Theater Pomona, in Pomona California was the location for the WBC Super Bantamweight Eliminator between Luis Nery and Azat Hovhannisyan in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The two top 10 fighters at 122lbs engaged in a brutal war. With Nery coming out the traps like a greyhound. Starting very quickly. Cutting, and marking the face of ‘Crazy A’ early. However, the Armenian came back into the fight of the year contender, with a sustained body attack.

Nery dug deep and turned the tide back in his favour as he knocked down Azat in the 10th. Somehow Hovhannisyan saw the end of the round. But a sustained flurry of punches midway through the 11th forced the referee to step in and stop the action. The TKO11 win now puts Nery in the mandatory position for the winner of the rumoured Fulton vs Inoue fight in the spring.

Shane Mosley Jr had a ‘keep busy’ fight as chief support on the card, winning a wide unanimous decision over tough Mexican, Mario Alberto Lozano. Lozano, who had been out since his 2019 loss to Liam Smith, gave a good account of himself in the bout, catching Mosley Jr on multiple occasions. However Mosley Jr’s newly minted aggressive style was too much for the 35 year old. Mosley Jr will now look for bouts at middleweight. With Jaime Munguia a possibility, as both fighters are signed with Golden Boy.

Ricardo Sandoval bounced back from his majority decision loss to World Title challenger David Jiminez, with a win over Jerson Ortiz. Sandoval delivered a sickening body shot in the 2nd round. Flooring the Nicaraguan, who was unable to beat the referees count. The win puts Sandoval right back into the title picture at flyweight, with fights with WBC champion Julio Cesar Martinez and Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez a possibility, as both fighters are based on DAZN.

An overall entertaining night served up by Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy. With a fight of the year contender, a sickening body shot KO by a top 10 flyweight, and an entertaining middleweight bout. Live on DAZN.
