A deal for WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada to defend his strap against the unified flyweight titleist Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez is nearing.

The battle of the top fifteen pound-for-pound fighters is being targeted for Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, June 29 – one day before Mexico’s soccer match with Ecuador, also in Arizona. Fernando Sabatini was first.

The fight, should it be finalised, would headline a Matchroom USA show and be streamed live on DAZN worldwide.

Estrada vs Bam Rodriguez: The Passing Of The Torch?

Estrada (44-3, 28 KOs) hasn’t fought since he edged a decision over Roman ‘Chocalatito’ Gonzalez in their trilogy fight in December 2022.

The Mexican was in talks to unify with Kazutko Ioka. A deal, however, could not be reached and the WBA has now ordered Ioka to face his mandatory challenger, Scrappy Ramirez, next.

Rodriguez won the vacant WBO Flyweight title in April and then unified with unbeaten IBF champion Sunny Edwards via an impressive stoppage win in a fight many people had as 50-50 going in.

Bam now looks to regain the WBC title he held in 2022 at super flyweight against one of the biggest stars of the lower weight classes, Estrada.
