TONIGHT: Fast-rising Super-Lightweight contender Dalton Smith (15-0, 11 KOs) steps up against the USA’s three-time World Title challenger Jose Zepeda ( 37-4, 28 KOs) at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena live on DAZN.
Smith sensationally knocked out Sam Maxwell with a vicious one-punch finisher in the seventh round of their meeting last year to add the Commonwealth Super-Lightweight Title to his British Title that he has now won outright.
California’s Zepeda has twice challenged for world honours at Super-Lightweight – falling short on points against Jose Carlos Ramirez for the WBC crown in 2019 before suffering an eleventh-round stoppage against Regis Prograis for the same title in November 2022.
In the co-feature, WBO Welterweight World Champion Sandy Ryan (6-1-1, 2 KOs) puts her gold on the line against the two-division World Champion Terri Harper (14-1-2, 6 KOs) in a huge domestic clash which will serve as the Smith vs Zepeda chief support.
Nico Leivars vs Piotr Mirga
In the first fight of the night, undefeated Nico Leivars steps up to face twice-beaten Piotr Mirga in a final eliminator for the English super bantamweight title.
Leivars on the front foot early, working the jab and pushing Mirga back. Aiming with that right hand as soon as he has Mirga with his back on the ropes.
BIG SHOTS going in from Leivars in the second half of the second, an unanswered flurry of punches and the referee had a look there but Mirga answered just in time.
Mirga caught with a left hook in round three and staggered again on the ropes. Leivars is winning comfortably through three completed rounds.
Leivars cut around the right eye in round four, and not the first time for the unbeaten Mansfield prospect. Mirga getting back into this fight.
Mirga backed up in round seven on the ropes as Leivars unloaded another big flurry, on the verge of getting his first stoppage but Mirga again saw out the storm.
Leivars does his best work when Mirga is on the ropes but at this point, it is clear who is the fresher of the two as Mirga holds on and is desperately waiting for the bell to sound the end of the round.
Leivars lands with a heavy left hook to the body and Mirga sinks into the canvas and sits out the count, it’s a first career stoppage for Leivars who broke his man down round after round.
Nico Leivars TKO-9 Piotr Mirga
Campbell Hatton vs James Flint
All-out war between James Flint and Campbell Hatton for the central area title. Neither man took a step back and this is being fought at an incredible pace.
A good round three for the champion who connects with several power punches in that round, not too much from Hatton, who is probably falling slightly behind in this fight now.
Campbell Hatton wins a slow fourth round and the fifth purely based on output, nothing significant landing from either man there but its the undefeated prospect pushing the pace and targeting the torso.
Hatton wobbled in the sixth round with a flurry and the feet came unstuck for a second there but the son of a legend fired straight back at Flint. Great action through six.
The Mancunian was caught again in the seventh by Flint. Good spell for the Yorkshire title holder after Hatton looked to be edging this at the halfway point.
Flint bossing the fight in the last minute of the eight, Hatton looks very tired and vulnerable to the superior punching power of Flint. All to fight for in the last two.
All action fight between Hatton and Flint, the feeling at ringside here is that Flint has done enough to keep his title. The champion came on strong in the tenth when he needed it and had a very strong second half of the fight overall.
James Flint BEATS Campbell Hatton to retain his Central Area title, Scores: 98-92, 97-94, 97-95
Ishmael Davis vs Troy Williamson
Ishmael Davis and Troy Williamson battle in a final eliminator for the British super welterweight title and a shot at the Louis Greene-Sam Gilley 2 winner as a result.
This fight is yet to catch fire like the first two but Ishmael Davis is comfortably ahead at the halfway point, boxing well on the back foot and effectively switching stances; giving Williamson different looks.
Davis starting to hold his feet more in the middle rounds and Williamson having a little more success. ‘The Black Panther’ not getting out of the way of the shots like he was in the early rounds.
Davis HURTS Williamson for the first time in the fight in round nine, Williamson was backed up on the ropes and eats a straight right on the inside.
Williamson is narrowing the gap in the second half after being significantly behind after six but it won’t be enough to turn back this one.
Ishmael Davis Beats Troy Williamson on PTS, Scores: 117-111, 116-112, 116-112
Sandy Ryan vs Terri Harper
Strong second round for Sandy Ryan who gets off her power shots against Terri Harper. Ryan is showing her strength and power early on in this fight, pushing Harper back and forcing her around the ring.
Ryan puts a beating on Harper in rounds three and four, backing her up and pushing Harper around at will. The former two-weight world champion has taken a lot of punches in the third and fourth, with the referee keeping a close eye on the fight.
Harper will not come out for the fifth round! Sandy Ryan TKO-4 Terri Harper
Dalton Smith vs Jose Zepeda Result
Cagey opener, Jose Zepeda chasing Dalton Smith around the ring, the British champion is just having a look and is not too keen to engage yet.
More active second round for Smith who unleashes a few combinations on the American but needs to be wary of the counters. 1-1
Smith landing with the back hand clean at will in rounds three and four, too sharp for Zepeda who is struggling to see them coming and has already lowered his counter-punching output in the fourth. 3-1 Smith
Smith lands with a right hand to the body and Zepeda doesn’t get up.
Dalton Smith KO-5 Jose Zepeda
