Canelo vs Ryder Will NOT Be PPV In The UK According To Eddie Hearn
Canelo vs Ryder To Be Included In The Regular DAZN Subscription For UK Viewers
ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported on Saturday that P4P star Canelo Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) and mandatory challenger, Britain’s John Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) are finalizing a deal to meet on May 6 for Canelo’s undisputed super middleweight championship.
The UK was touted as an option to stage the fight last year with the Middle East and the US also considered but, according to Coppinger, Canelo will take a pay cut to fight in his native Mexico for the first time in over a decade.
A site hasn’t been confirmed but multiple stadiums are in play with the front runner being the 46,000-plus capacity Akron Stadium located in Alvarez’s hometown of Jalisco in Guadalajara. The Jalisco Stadium and two other unnamed venues are also in the running.
Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed to various media outlets last week, including iFL TV, that he believes Canelo vs Ryder will be part of the regular DAZN subscription in the United Kingdom and not be an pay-per-view offering. “Canelo Alvarez in May will be part of your subscription…As I understand it, No (it won’t be PPV)”
The Mexican star’s bout against Dmitry Bivol last year was on regular DAZN but his September trilogy against Gennadiy Golovkin found its way onto DAZN’s PPV platform for an additional £9.99.
In 2021, his fight with Caleb Plant was offered on BT Sport Box Office, so fans wouldn’t be surprised if Alvarez’s fight were PPV, but offering it as part of the regular subscription in addition to the return of Anthony Joshua in April indicates a major attempt from DAZN to deliver value for money.
