BREAKING: Mauricio Lara vs Leigh Wood 2 CONFIRMED; World Title Fight Rematch Lands May 27

Mauricio Lara vs Leigh Wood 2 OFFICIAL As Wood Executes Rematch Clause

Mauricio Lara came from behind on the scorecards to dramatically stop Leigh Wood in their first encounter in February to win the WBA Featherweight Title at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham.

‘Leightal’ seemed to be in complete control of the bout through 6 rounds, with Lara only winning the 2nd, in which he shook Wood badly. All was going well for Wood, until the last minute of the 7th. The two featherweight warriors traded left hooks, and Lara’s landed far cleaner with Wood loading up on the punch giving away speed.

Wood was put down badly, and despite him getting to his feet at the count of 8, his trainer Ben Davison controversially threw in the towel – a move that was much debated immediately after but seems to have become more popular as hours passed.

Just three months on, Wood (26-3 16 KOs) will get another chance at his world title as he battles Mexican Lara (26-2-1, 19 KOs) on May 27 at the 20,000-capacity AO Arena in Manchester, England live on DAZN.

Wood’s domestic rival Josh Warrington was also in-play to land the Lara bout on May 27 but Wood’s rematch clause has got him the fight instead with Eddie Hearn hoping Warrington can face the winner later this year. Otabek Kholmatov is the mandatory challenger for the belt, a fight that is likely to be ordered next.

New signing and former undisputed super lightweight title challenger, Chorley’s Jack Catterall (26-1, 13 KOs) is expected to make his Matchroom debut on the undercard. Catterall inked with Ben Shalom’s BOXXER/Sky Sports last August to stage the Josh Taylor rematch but with the fallout of that rematch, Catterall’s contract became void and he has left Shalom for rival promoter Hearn.

Also on that day, Chris Billam-Smith will headline at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth with an opponent to be confirmed at a news conference on Tuesday and Michael Conlan will challenge Mexico’s Luis Alberto Lopez for his IBF Featherweight title at The SSE Arena in Conlan’s hometown of Belfast.
