Ellie Scotney To Fight For Interim World Title As Cherneka Johnson Requests Exemption
Mandatory Challenger Ellie Scotney Will Have To Settle For The IBF Interim Title For Now
Super Bantamweight contender Ellie Scotney (6-0) will have to wait a little bit longer for her world title shot as Eddie Hearn has confirmed to Boxing UK that the 25-year-old Londoner will face the IBF #2 Maureen Shea (30-2-1) in her next fight. USA’s Shea and IBF mandatory Scotney will collide for the interim world championship.
Hearn revealed the contest was being targeted for April and NoSmoke understands that this will likely be on the Sheffield card on April 15/29 which also features Dalton Smith and Terri Harper vs Cecilia Braekhus live on DAZN.
Australia’s Cherneka Johnson (15-1, 6 KOs) is the IBF Super Bantamweight champion and, according to Hearn, has requested a medical exemption due to a horrendous cut suffered in her last contest which will rule her out of action until July/August.
Hearn, however, does not believe this to be the case and suspects Johnson is not a fan of facing Scotney, revealing that other fighters have been offered a fight with the Australian.
“It’s very very frustrating. Ellie Scotney has done unbelievable and been in some perfect fights that have got her a mandatory position for Cherneka Johnson.”
“I don’t know what they’re up to (but) we have it in writing (from the IBF) that Cherneka Johnson is not allowed to fight anyone else other than Ellie Scotney”.
Stay tuned for further updates and confirmation of Scotney’s next fight date.
