Maxi Hughes Offered Gary Cully Fight On Taylor Serrano 2 Undercard

Matchroom Eyes Britain vs Ireland, Maxi Hughes vs Gary Cully Lightweight Clash On Katie Taylor Homecoming Show

Former IBO Lightweight champion, Yorkshire’s Maxi Hughes (26-5-2, 5 KOs) revealed to iFL TV that he has been offered a fight with Naas’ Gary Cully (15-0, 9 KOs).

Both Hughes and Cully are world-ranked lightweights represented by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, who now wants to pit them against each other to find the better horse in the race.

NoSmokeBoxing understands that the offer was for the pair to battle on the historic Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano rematch undercard, scheduled to take place on May 20 in Dublin, Ireland live on DAZN

Maxi Hughes told iFL TV “We’ve had an offer to fight Cully but my first thought is why? Cause Eddie told me ‘Oh I like that fight but I know your past that Maxi and I want to get you a bigger fight’. Why send me the offer then?”

Hughes doesn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about fighting a prospect like Cully. Hughes would prefer to take a world-level fight or at least an eliminator that could put him in a position for a major fight. A fight where he could challenge himself and even if he lost, he would know he stepped up and tried.

The Yorkshiremen is ranked with 2 governing bodies, the IBF and the WBC, where he holds a #9 and 12 ranking respectively while Cully is the WBA’s #13 ranked contender. Earlier this year, there were talks about Hughes taking on Giovanni Cabrera in an IBF Eliminator but nothing seems to have materialised from that.

Should they agree on terms for a May 20 bout, they would be joining a night of boxing that will go down in both Ireland and boxing’s history.

Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) edged Serrano (43-2-1, 30 KOs) via a split decision in their first encounter last April in front of a sell-out at Madison Square Garden, New York. The fight was an instant classic with many believing there was little competition for the fight of the year after the spectacle they witnessed on April 30, 2022.

Now they do it again, this time Ireland’s most decorated athlete is back at home and it will be the hottest ticket in town. The biggest fight in women’s boxing history lands on May 20 and all the eyes of the world will be on the sport of boxing in Dublin, Ireland.
