David Benavidez takes to social media to issue Canelo challenge!
Undefeated super middleweight contender David Benavidez has taken to Instagram today to issue a direct challenge to undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez. Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) reached out to Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) with a simple message: “Let’s give the people what they want to see.” The call-out comes at an opportune moment, as boxing fans have been fervently pushing for a clash between the two Mexicans, many favouring Benavidez as an opponent over the Dmitry Bivol rematch.
Canelo‘s recent remarks after his hard-fought victory over John Ryder have indicated his intentions in avenging the defeat he suffered at the hands of Bivol last year. While addressing his fans in Guadalajara, he expressed a desire for the rematch with the WBA light heavyweight champion with the same terms of their previous encounter.
Following his points decision victory over Ryder, many pundits have alluded to the fact Canelo’s career may be on the decline. talkSPORT’s Gareth A Davies highlighted this, noting that he no longer employs the trademark move where he evades opponents and devastates them with his left hook to the liver. Davies even suggested that Canelo may only have a few fights left in him, hinting at a diminishing skill set and waning effectiveness.

Holding the WBC “interim” belt at 168 pounds, Benavidez’s call-out of Canelo demonstrates his confidence and ambition to face the sport’s premier super middleweight.
