Regis Prograis vs Jack Catterall Is Catterall’s Preferred Option But A Ordered Final Eliminator Could Also Be In Play

NoSmokeSport understands that representatives of undisputed super lightweight title challenger, Chorley’s Jack Catterall (26-1, 13 KOs) and WBC champion, USA’s Regis Prograis (28-1, 24 KOs) are in talks for a May fight for Prograis’ WBC 140-pound title. Catterall is represented by Ben Shalom’s BOXXER/Sky Sports whilst Prograis’ last two bouts were under the Probellum banner.

The IBF has ordered an final eliminator bout between their #3 and #4 ranked contenders Catterall and Uzbekistan’s Shohjahon Ergashev (23-0 20 KOs) NoSmokeSport understands. The IBF’s ordering of Catterall-Ergashev was first reported by Boxing Scene.

Sources have now confirmed to this outlet that although Prograis is the preferred option for Catterall’s next bout, a fight with Ergashev is also of interest to the Brit. Prograis is a direct title shot, whilst a win over Ergashev makes him mandatory to IBF champion Subriel Matias.

WBO champion Josh Taylor has also confirmed to TalkSport that he plans to give Catterall a rematch if he gets past Teofimo Lopez, a bout ESPN reports will land on June 10 in New York live on ESPN/ESPN +.

The 29-year-old southpaw Catterall hasn’t fought since his heavily controversial split decision loss at the hands of Taylor for the undisputed Light Welterweight titles last February. Prograis recorded a 11th-round KO over Jose Zepeda (36-2) to win the vacant WBC strap last November. Both Prograis and Catterall hold tight decision losses to Taylor.

Ergashev is lesser known outside the hardcore fans and hasn’t really faced a high-calibre opponent. The Uzebk is highly-rated though and many feel he is a champion in waiting. Either a fight with Prograis or Ergashev will be interesting and see Catterall once again compete in world level fights.
