Canelo vs Ryder Venue To be 50,000-capacity + Stadium In Guadalajara, Mexico
P4P star Canelo Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) and mandatory challenger, Britain’s John Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) are finalizing a deal to meet on May 6 for Canelo’s undisputed super middleweight championship, according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.
The UK was touted as an option to stage the fight last year with the Middle East and the US also considered but Canelo will take a pay cut to fight in his native Mexico for the first time in over a decade.
The 46,000-plus capacity Akron Stadium located in Zapopan, Mexico was the front runner but NoSmokeSport has learnt that the venue is now out of the race. Instead, Canelo vs Ryder is expected to land at the 55,110-capacity Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, a source tells NoSmokeSport.
Friday, March 3 EDIT: Canelo vs Ryder will now be back at the Akron Stadium despite the Jalisco Stadium previously being the front runner.
The fight will stream on a DAZN platform in the United States, and with the subscription price jumping up for US subscribers, the clash is expected to be available as part of the regular DAZN subscription instead of DAZN PPV, where Canelo’s last two bouts were streamed and generated a combined 1.3m sales.
Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed to various media outlets last week, including iFL TV, that he believes Canelo vs Ryder will be part of the regular DAZN subscription in the United Kingdom, as well, and not be a PPV offering. “Canelo Alvarez in May will be part of your subscription…As I understand it, No (it won’t be PPV)”
