SPOTLIGHT ON SUNNY EDWARDS- Matchroom Debut And 4th Defence Of IBF Flyweight Title This Saturday!

Sunny Edwards makes his Matchroom debut this Saturday night when he defends his IBF World Flyweight title against undefeated Chilean, Andres Campos. A move that a little while ago would have seemed impossible, Sunny has linked up with promoter Eddie Hearn of whom he has a history of back-and-forth debates with!

Sunny Edwards (27), born on 1st January 1996, has emerged as one of the most promising British professional boxers in recent years. As the younger brother of former Flyweight World Champion Charlie Edwards, Sunny has carved his own path in the sport and achieved significant success. Holding the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Flyweight title since 2021, Edwards has solidified his position as one of the top fighters in the division.

He started his journey at Repton ABC and later moved to Steel City ABC. During his amateur career, Edwards showcased his talent by winning multiple national championships. In 2013, he claimed the ABA Juniors title, followed by the ABA Youth title in 2014. Edwards reached new heights in 2015 when he secured the ABA Elite championship. He also earned silver medals in the GB Junior and ABA Elite Championships in 2012 and 2016, respectively.

Edwards (19-0, 4 KOs) made his professional debut on 24th September 2016, defeating Sergey Tasimov at the Recinto Ferial in Estepona, Spain. After a string of victories, he faced undefeated prospect Ross Murray on 27th November 2017, winning the fight via a fourth-round technical knockout to capture the vacant WBO European Super-Flyweight belt. Edwards continued to showcase his prowess by successfully defending his WBO European title on 26th October 2018, with a unanimous decision victory over Ryan Farrag.

In December 2019, he faced Junior Granados for the vacant WBO International Super-Flyweight title. Despite a second-round knockdown, Edwards emerged victorious, adding another title to his collection. He then defended his WBO European title against Pedro Matos in April 2019, winning via eighth-round TKO. In July of the same year, he secured the vacant IBF International Super-Flyweight belt with a unanimous decision victory against Hiram Gallardo.

Edwards decided to drop down to Flyweight when he faced Rosendo Guarneros on 14th September 2019, winning by unanimous decision to capture the vacant IBF International and vacant WBO Inter-Continental flyweight titles. In December of the same year, Edwards fought Marcel Braithwaite for the vacant British super-flyweight strap. Despite being knocked down in the seventh round, Edwards displayed resilience and secured a unanimous decision victory.

Following his triumphs, Edwards continued his winning streak, defending his IBF International flyweight title against Thomas Essomba in August 2020, winning via unanimous decision. However, the pinnacle of his career came in April 2021 when he challenged Moruti Mthalane for the IBF flyweight title. Mthalane, an established champion with a remarkable winning streak, was favored to win. However, Edwards defied the odds and secured a unanimous decision victory, becoming the new IBF World Flyweight Champion.

Since becoming the IBF flyweight champion, Edwards has successfully defended his title on 3 occasions. Notably, he defeated Jayson Mama by unanimous decision in December 2021, scoring a knockdown in the tenth round. In March 2022, he faced Muhammad Waseem and last November Felix Alvarado winning these, both again, by unanimous decision.

Now the Spotlight is well and truly on him Saturday as he makes his Matchroom debut live on DAZN. He faces stern competition from undefeated 26-year-old Chilean Andres Campos (15-0, 4 KOs), who has claimed he “will send him to sleep” and said he is starving for success.

It looks on paper like it might be one of the toughest nights in Sunny’s career so far as he headlines the show at Wembley Arena. Ever present on social media, Sunny this week cheekily asked his new promoter, Eddie Hearn, if he will give him a follow on Twitter if he stops his Campos! He has also had recent run ins with his own brother and former World Champion Charlie Edwards. Charlie was also once under the Matchroom banner and has called Sunny out for a brother vs brother clash at some point in the future!

Sunny will be looking to put in a dominant display this weekend and send a statement to the likes of Jesse “Bam” Rodriquez, Julio Cesar Martinez, and Artem Dalakian, the other champions in the division. He has repeatedly spoken about his desire to unify and a solid performance Saturday might mean a unification bout could be next!
