– Lara vs Wood 2 Undercard Details

Mauricio Lara came from behind on the scorecards to dramatically stop Leigh Wood in their first encounter in February to win the WBA Featherweight Title at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham.

‘Leightal’ seemed to be in complete control of the bout through 6 rounds, with Lara only winning the 2nd, in which he shook Wood badly. All was going well for Wood, until the last minute of the 7th. The two featherweight warriors traded left hooks, and Lara’s landed far cleaner with Wood loading up on the punch giving away speed.

Wood was put down badly, and despite him getting to his feet at the count of 8, his trainer Ben Davison controversially threw in the towel – a move that was much debated immediately after but seems to have become more popular as hours passed.

Just three months on, Wood (26-3 16 KOs) will get another chance at his world title as he battles Mexican Lara (26-2-1, 19 KOs) this SaturdayMay 27 at the 20,000-capacity AO Arena in Manchester, England live on DAZN.

Wood’s domestic rival Josh Warrington was also in-play to land the Lara bout on May 27 but Wood’s rematch clause has got him the fight instead with Eddie Hearn hoping Warrington can face the winner later this year. Otabek Kholmatov is the mandatory challenger for the belt, a fight that is likely to be ordered next.

Lara vs Wood 2 Undercard

Main Card

In the co-feature, Australian-based Irishmen Darragh Foley (22-4-1, 10 KOs) looks to give the uncrowned undisputed champion, Chorley’s Jack Catterall (26-1, 13 KOs) all he can handle.

Foley upset Robbie Davies Jr via a third-round RTD in their Liverpool bout in March on the Pacheco-Cullen undercard. Davies Jr injured his ankle during a knockdown in the second round of the clash which prevented him from continuing.

A real character outside the ring, ‘the upsetter’ now lands a bigger fight inside it against the new Matchroom signing Catterall.

Should Catterall win on May 27, plans are in place for him to headline at the 20,000-capacity AO Arena in Manchester this September, potentially in a world title clash with another Matchroom fighter Regis Prograis, a fight that was discussed before Catterall’s departure from BOXXER.

WBA Super Welterweight champion Terri Harper (13-1-1, 6 KOs) makes the maiden defence of her 154-pound championship against Croatia’s Ivana Habazin (21-4, 7 KOs).

Harper moved up three weight classes to dominate Hannah Rankin last September to win the belt. She attempted to unify with Natasha Jonas who holds the other three titles but Jonas has shown zero interest in an undisputed bout with Harper after their clash in 2020, which ended in a draw.

The Doncaster-based champion was supposed to return last week against Cecilia Brekahus until the Norweign pulled out on the day of the fight with illness. Just 24 hours later and Harper was given another fight date with an opponent scheduled for just 6 days later.

Habazin owned the IBF welterweight title for six months in 2014 and now looks to become a two-time champion almost a decade on. The Croatian lost to Claressa Shields in her last high-profile bout in 2020 on Showtime. Habazin is mandatory for Jessica McCaskill but has chosen to face Harper instead.

Danny Ball (12-1-1) and Jamie Robinson (15-5-2) collide in what could be the fight of the night over 10 rounds with the English Welterweight Title up for grabs. Ball, who unsuccessfully challenged Ekow Essuman for the British crown in 2021, was supposed to face Anthony Tomlinson on this card but the man from Sheffield withdrew just days after the announcement and Robinson, coming off a career-best win over Ben Fields stepped in.

8 rounds are scheduled for Oldham’s Aqib Fiaz (11-0) who made a statement by recording the first stoppage of his professional career against his toughest test to date in Dean Dodge. Costin Ion (10-3-2), who has never been beaten inside the distance, hopes to extend the 23-year-old the full distance at Super-Featherweight.

Lara vs Wood 2 Prelims

A third outing in the first five months of the year for Mancunian Campbell Hatton (11-0) in another slight step-up in the form of Michal Bulik (6-2) – 8 rounds Super-Lightweight

A second pro contest for the popular Aaron Bowen (1-0) against Aljaz Venko (5-3-1) over six rounds at Middleweight.

William Crolla, the brother of former world champion Anthony Crolla, debuts in his hometown with journeyman Joe Hardy (2-9) in the opposite corner for their 4 round bout at Super-Welterweight.
