Spotlight on Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez as he bids to become 2 weight world champion!

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez faces Christian Gonzalez this Saturday night, as he tops the bill in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Bam will be looking to become a 2 weight World Champion at the tender age of 23 when the 2 go head to head for the vacant WBO World Flyweight Title live on DAZN. We take a look at his career so far.

Jesse started his amateur career in 2013 and won his first fight, aged only 13. He went on to box in the amateurs for a further 3 years with an impressive record of 19 wins and only 2 defeats. In 2015, Rodriguez won a silver medal at the Junior World Championships as an amateur, and he won two U.S. National Youth Championships in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, he won the U.S. Junior Open Tournament as well.

Rodriguez made his professional debut against Mauricio Cruz in March 2017, winning by unanimous decision. By the end of 2019, Rodriguez had a 10-0 record, six of those victories coming by stoppage. Trained by legend that is Robert Garcia, Bam went onto win fights against Marco Sustaita, Janiel Rivera, and Saul Juarez. His expected fight against the reigning WBA (Regular) champion Esteban Bermudez was cancelled, and he instead faced Jose Alejandro Burgos on October 16, 2021, whom he beat by a fourth-round knockout.

Eddie Hearn and Matchroom saw the potential in Jesse and announced his signature in 2021, a deal he would go on to extend less then a year later. In February of 2022 he became the youngest World Champion in the sport. At just 22, he defeated Carlos Cuadras via unanimous decision to pick up the WBC World Super-Flyweight Title.

Four months later Bam was catching the eyes of the public once more when he Thai veteran Rungvisai his first knock-out loss since 2009! Jesse would go on to defend the belt once more to close out a spectacular 2022, defeating Israel Gonzalez on points.

On October 26, 2022, Rodriguez vacated the super flyweight title to compete at flyweight, and the WBO rankings committee approved a request for Rodriguez to be ranked as the top contender at flyweight on October 28, 2022.

He now faces Christian Gonzalez with his bid to become a Two weight World Champion at just 2023! With having an already incredible journey in such a short space of time, it looks like Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez is well on his way to cementing his legacy as one of boxings greats.
